Types of Martial Arts taught at RCMA

Tae Kwon Do & Hapkido

How does Hapkido differ from Tae Kwon Do?

Hapkido is a Korean art not dissimilar to Tae Kwon Do in that it employs an extensive collection of kicks. However, Hapkido is much more concerned with joint-locks, limb immobilization, and throwing techniques than Tae Kwon Do. Circular, flowing motions are much more eveident in Hapkido since blocks and deflections are designed to redirect an opponent's momentum and set him or her up for a counterattack. In fact the name Hapkido reveals much of it's methodology. "Hap" means coordination or harmony, "ki" is of course, the inner life force, and "do" translates as "the way". Thus, Hapkido is "the way of coordinated power" or force.
